New Music in Lockdown

The Pandemic has caused such disruption to so many people, especially in the Arts. It has been an absolute pleasure to be part of a creative project with Jumis Ensemble: their Composer Collaboration with the fabulous Rhiannon Randle. A collaboration born out of lockdown, to create magical new music for the Ensemble members, premiered via new digital formats live to you at home. Support from audience members and the RVW Trust has been overwhelming to get this project off the ground. It has been fantastic at a time when most events in the UK are continually being cancelled, to find a way of creating something brand new, both musically and in delivery. Personally, it has been a real highlight of 2020.

So against all the odds, Jumis Ensemble and Rhiannon Randle are delighted to present four ‘Ensemble Solos’. One for each member of the ensemble to perform, premiered online in four live, interactive online events between August-December 2020.

‘Triquetra’ for Solo Cello. Toby White, cello

‘Ozoliņi’ for Solo Violin. Sabīne Sergejeva, violin

‘Barcarolle’ for Solo Viola. Henrietta Hill, viola

‘Aube’ for Solo Piano. Ryan Drucker, piano. - World Premiere 19th December 2020 6.30pm GMT.

Reflecting back on my last blog on ‘Digital Innovation’, it’s been a journey getting to know the ‘dos and don’ts’ of livestreams. Will they be here to stay? I think yes they will, but be prepared for diverging formats from just a traditional ‘concert birds-eye-view’. They won’t and should not, replace the experience of live performances. But this time of digital experimentation is to be welcomed. In the long term, livestreams should be enjoyed as an Artform in their own right.

Join Jumis Ensemble on 19th December to enjoy the final instalment of their Composer Collaboration livestreams: I’m looking forward to hearing Ryan’s World Premiere performance of ‘Aube’ by Rhiannon Randle.
